This sample implementation plan for Kentucky is designed to

ensure that all students complete a career development plan and

engage in WBL opportunities throughout their PK-12 education, in

alignment with the state’s career education, exploration, CTE, and WBL

standards.

Throughout PK-12th grade

Use Requested sessions (WBL) and Career to develop career awareness and

interest. Use Lessons to develop student skills and knowledge.

Elementary School (Grades PK-5 - Pathful Jr.)

At the elementary level, career exploration is primarily about introducing students

to the concept of careers, helping them understand the world of work, and

starting to identify personal interests and strengths.

Pathful Jr. provides tailored content for young students, introducing them to

different careers through short videos and virtual guest speakers. These

resources can help teachers integrate career-related themes into lessons.

Career Profiles and WBL Library: Using engaging, age-appropriate content,

students can watch videos about real professionals discussing their jobs,

which aligns with the goal of exposing students to different careers.

Virtual Field Trips: Pathful offers virtual tours of workplaces, allowing

elementary students to see inside industries like healthcare, engineering, and

more.

How it Supports Kentucky’s Standards:

Provides exposure to various industries and professionals, fostering early

awareness of career possibilities.

Encourages students to relate their personal interests to career fields, using

interactive media and assessments.

Allows educators to build on students' communication and collaborative

skills through activities and discussions after viewing the career videos.

Throughout the lessons students practice core subject skills that help them

Introduce students to the ILP process, career clusters, and the concept of setting

academic and personal goals.

Career Interest Assessment: Students take the Interest Assessment to explore a

range of career clusters that align with their personal interests and strengths.

Virtual Career Tours: Use Pathful’s WBL module to introduce students to different

industries and career options.

Goal-Setting Activities: Guide students through setting initial academic and

personal goals that align with their future career interests.

7th Grade: Exploring Career Pathways and Strengths

Help students explore specific career pathways and begin identifying their strengths

and areas for development.

Career Pathway Exploration Videos: Students watch videos that introduce various

career pathways, highlighting necessary skills and educational requirements.

Self-Reflection Tools: Students watch Career Cluster Overview videos, and take the

Personality Assessment to develop the knowledge needed to use the Student

Reflection Sheets.

Skill Development Modules: Students engage in soft skills modules focused on

communication, teamwork, and time management, all critical to the Portrait of a

Learner.

8th Grade: Developing Individual Learning Plans and High School

Preparation

Students begin creating their ILPs, setting long-term academic and career goals, and

selecting high school courses aligned with their interests.

Career Match Tools: Use Pathful’s Assessment and Career explorer to help students

align their personal interests and skills with specific career clusters and potential high

school course.

High School Course Planning: Use Pathful Planner to guide students in selecting high

school courses that align with their career interests and future plans.

Virtual Career Fairs: Offer access to virtual career fairs, via Pathful’s WBL module,

where students can explore various industries and engage with professionals in their

fields of interest.

Middle School (Grades 6-8): Career Awareness

and Personal Goal-Setting

WBL Continuum Focus: Preparation, Participation, and Experience

ILP Focus: Advanced career exploration, work-based learning, and

postsecondary planning

Portrait of a Learner Focus: Problem-solving, adaptability, and

responsible decision-making

9th Grade: Refining Career Interests and Academic Pathways

Refine students’ ILPs, deepen career exploration, and align academic coursework with

long-term goals.

Additional Career Exploration Assessments: Students retake the Interest

Assessment, along with the Personality, Work Values and Skills Assessments to refine

their career interests.

Long-Term Goal Setting: Use Pathful’s Goal Setting Tools to help students set more

focused, long-term academic and career goals, documented in their ILPs.

Session Requests: Teachers submit session requests so students can engage with

industry professionals, discussing the skills and education required in their fields.

10th Grade: Introduction to Work-Based Learning and

Skill Building

Introduce students to work-based learning (WBL) experiences while continuing skill-

building in areas related to their career interests.

Virtual Job Shadowing: Engage students in virtual job shadowing experiences that

allow them to observe professionals in real-world settings. Further experience can be

garnered through Session Requests.

Workplace Readiness Modules: Develop essential skills such as leadership, critical

thinking, and adaptability through Pathful’s Employability, Postsecondary and Work-

Based Learning Lessons and Courses.

ILP Updates: Guide students in updating their ILPs with new insights gained from their

WBL experiences, ensuring their plans remain aligned with their goals.

High School (Grades 9-12): Career Preparation,

Work-Based Learning, and Postsecondary Transition

11th Grade: Advanced WBL and Postsecondary Planning

Provide more advanced WBL opportunities and help students plan for postsecondary

education or workforce entry.

Internship and Apprenticeship Connections: Connect students with virtual or local

internship and apprenticeship opportunities facilitated through Pathful’s WBL network

and Session Requests.

Resume and Interview Skills Modules: Equip students with resume-building and

interview skills through Pathful’s career readiness tools, preparing them for

postsecondary opportunities. Students begin working on a resume and cover-letter

using Pathful’s tools and practice interview skills though Session Requests.

College and Career Research Tools: Students use the Postsecondary module to

research postsecondary education options, financial aid, and entry-level career

pathways, which they document in their ILPs.

12th Grade: Capstone Projects and Postsecondary Transition

Planning

Help students finalize their ILPs, complete a capstone project, and transition into

postsecondary education or career fields.

Capstone Project Development: Guide students in completing a capstone project

that demonstrates their career readiness and mastery of skills relevant to their

chosen field. Use Session Requests so that students can get practice presenting and

real feedback from industry pros.

Postsecondary Transition Planning: Use Pathful’s planning tools to help students

prepare for life after high school, whether they are entering college, technical training,

or the workforce. Use lessons to provide additional support during this transition

phase and to build out the students’ skill set based on their path.

Final ILP Review: Assist students in finalizing their ILPs, ensuring that all career

experiences, academic achievements, and skill development are documented.
